Beyond Google: What Makes Your Business Worth Citing

The answer is more accessible than you might think, and understanding it can help you make smart, strategic decisions about where to focus your visibility efforts.
In our previous article, we explored how AI is expanding the ecosystem of customer discovery beyond traditional search. Now let’s look at what happens behind the scenes when AI tools generate responses and what factors influence which sources they reference.
Once you understand how the system works, you can make informed choices about where to invest your time and effort.
How AI Generates Its Answers
When you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the response you get is not pulled from a single website like a Google search result. Instead, AI tools use a process called Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG, to construct their answers.
In simple terms, when a user asks a question, the AI system breaks that question into related sub-queries, searches multiple sources across the web for relevant information, extracts the passages that best answer each part of the question, and then assembles a response that draws from those various sources. The citations you see are the specific pages the AI referenced to build its answer.
AI search engines pull from multiple sources, extract the passages that best answer a question, and cite only the pages those answers come from. They don’t rank pages or evaluate content as a whole the way traditional search engines do.
This is a fundamental difference from Google, and it changes what kinds of content and visibility signals matter most.
The Sources AI Tools Cite Most Often
Recent research has revealed some surprising patterns about which sources AI tools reference most frequently. Understanding these patterns can help you think strategically about where your business should have a presence.
Wikipedia and Reddit Dominate ChatGPT Citations
5W Public Relations analyzed approximately 600,000 citation events from January to February 2026, and found that Wikipedia (13.15%) and Reddit (11.97%) together account for more than 25% of all Chat GPT citations in the United States. Notably, major publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Bloomberg do not appear in the top 20 sources.
A separate Semrush 2025 study found that Wikipedia had a citation frequency of about 26.3% across large language models, making it one of the single most-cited sources overall.
Perplexity Has Its Own Preferences
Research on Perplexity's citation patterns shows the platform relies heavily on Reddit, which accounts for 46.7% of Perplexity’s top 10 citations, more than three times the share of its next most-cited source, YouTube (13.9%). Perplexity also draws from LinkedIn, NIH, and G2 for various types of queries.
AI Citations Are Long-Tail
Outside of Wikipedia and Reddit, no single domain exceeds 3% of ChatGPT citations. This means AI citations are distributed across many sources rather than concentrated in a few dominant sites. For local businesses, this creates an opportunity to be part of that distribution.
The Three Factors That Influence AI Citations
Based on current research, three main factors influence AI tools reference a particular source:
- Cross-Platform Presence and Third-Party Validation
AI systems tend to favor entities with verifiable cross-platform presence. As research from ZipTie explains, a brand that appears consistently across authoritative directories, review platforms, and community discussions creates a denser trust signal than one with an isolated website, no matter how well-optimized that website is.
Practical implementations for local businesses
- Presence on review platforms relevant to your industry (Google Reviews, Yelp, Trustpilot for local services; industry-specific platforms like G2 or Capterra in you’re in software)
- Consistent business information across directories
- Community discussion and mentions on platforms like Reddit
- Industry publication mentions and expert commentary
According to 5W Research, brands with presence across multiple review and directory platforms relevant to their industry see meaningfully higher citation rates compared to brands relying on their website alone.
- Content Structure and Placement
Where information sits on a page significantly affects whether AI systems extract and cite it. Research suggests a substantial portion of AI citations come from the first third of a webpage’s content.
This means content that buries key information below lengthy introductions is less likely to be cited. AI tools favor content that answers questions directly and quickly.
Structural elements that support AI citation include:
- Clear, direct answers near the top of pages
- Question-based headings that match how people search
- FAQ sections with concise answers
- Well-structured content with clear headings and lists
- Schema markup that helps AI understand your content
- Freshness and Consistency
AI systems tend to favor content that appears current and reliable. Guidance on content structure suggests that regularly updated content performs better in AI citations than content that hasn’t been updated in years. This doesn’t mean rewriting everything constantly, but rather keeping your important pages current and displaying visible update dates when you make meaningful updates.
Consistency also matters. AI systems tend to skip brands with conflicting information across sources, so having accurate, matching details about your business everywhere it appears strengthens your signals.
The Encouraging News for Small and Local Businesses
The key takeaways for business owners:
You don’t have to compete with the New York Times. The fact that major publications don’t dominate AI citations means smaller, more focused sources have a good opportunity to earn visibility through quality content and consistent presence in the right places.
Community presence is important. The heavy weighing of Reddit, review platforms, and community discussion forums plays to small business strengths. Local businesses already have communities, customer relationships, and reputations. Making sure those exist in structured, findable ways online can impact AI visibility.
Content structure is often more important than content volume. A well-structured shorter page with direct answers can be cited more often than a longer, disorganized article. This is great when time is limited to produce large amounts of content.
Your Next Steps
Understanding how AI citations work is the first step. Knowing where to focus your efforts is the next. In our final article of this series, we'll dive into practical, actionable steps you can take to structure your content in ways that make it easier for AI systems to find, understand, and reference.
For now, here are three things you can do based on what we've covered:
1. Audit Your Cross-Platform Presence
Take stock of where your business appears online beyond your own website. Are you on relevant review platforms for your industry? Do you have accurate information on directories that matter for your business type? Are your business details consistent everywhere?
2. Notice What Gets Cited in Your Industry
When you use ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews to research topics in your industry, pay attention to which sources get referenced. Are competitors appearing? What kinds of content are being cited? This intelligence is valuable for shaping your own approach.
3. Consider Your Community Presence
Reddit's significant influence on AI citations makes community engagement more strategically valuable than it may have seemed before. This does not mean spamming Reddit with promotional content, which is counterproductive and against community norms. It means finding genuine ways to be helpful in communities related to your industry.
Looking Ahead
The way AI tools generate citations is technical, but the principles behind what gets referenced are actually quite understandable: be present in credible places, structure your content clearly, keep information consistent and current, and build genuine authority in your field.
None of this replaces what you've been doing to build your business. It complements it. The relationships you've built, the expertise you've developed, and the reputation you've earned are all foundational to AI visibility. What's changing is how those assets translate into being found by future customers.
